On 27th August BCP Council has said they’ve secured over £4.5 million to fund access to safe accommodations for homeless people.

​BCP Council has said the four and a half million pound funding will deliver greater accommodation for people faced with rough sleeping. This announcement of funding security comes after an announcement the day prior of the first wave of funding from the Social and Affordable Homes Programme.​

​Councillor Kieron Wilson, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regulatory Services independently claimed the investment showed the Council’s ability to deliver meaningful change for its residents. According to the Research and Analysis carried out by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, on August 27th 2026. "The number of people sleeping rough over the month in June 2026 was at a record high for this time of year"

According to the Ministry's data, so far an increase in homelessness of 0.2% has been seen as of 27th August 2026. The majority gender demographic of males at 79% and placing females at 18%.

Compared to last year's data framework which found an estimated 8,748 people were reportedly sleeping rough over August. Interpreting this data, there is apparently a greater number of homeless people on the streets so far for this month of the current year compared with last year of the same month.

While statistics are very important pieces of evidence in understanding critical issues such as homelessness, it's important not to overlook the individual lives effected by homelessness as well. In 2021, the Office of National Statistics reported "There was an estimated 741 deaths of homeless people in England and Wales" Currently, we've been unable to find any recent statistics from the Office of National Statistics on deaths of homeless people. As a result, this cited data would need to be interpreted to reflect homesslness at the time and can't be said to accurately reflect recent recent years' data.

Considering the current rates of homelessness, our independent interpretation of BCP Council's £4.5 million investment secured for homelessness, presents a potentially positive future for homelessness in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

A National Plan to End Homelessness was presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government at the time: Steve Reed OBE. 

Considering the current rates of homelessness, our independent interpretation of BCP Council's £4.5 million investment secured for homelessness, presents a potentially positive future for homelessness in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole which could secure both immediately required short term financial relief for homeless people and rough sleepers.

According to an article published by Places for People (An independent housing organization) in June 2024 reported that 'Homelessness is a concern for one in five people in the UK' The independent article reported that 21% of people in the UK fear that they themself or someone they know could become homeless in the next year.

According to that same article, Places for People "urges whoever forms the next government to build 90,000 social homes a year". In the Article, reportedly "80% of UK say homelessness is a major national issue and 77% believe Government must build more social homes to tackle it." According to Places for People.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government in 2025 published 'The Social and Affordable Homes Programme and the reinvigoration of council housebuilding" policy paper, outlining their plan to build council houses "on a scale not seen in decades" delivering their 10 year £39 billion Social and Affordable Homes Programme to maximize the supply of housing like Social Rent homes with a stated target to deliver at least 60% of the homes under the Programme in line with their manifesto pledges in the 2024 General Election.
